How I work

A subtitling job is high quality only if a clear and defined workflow is being followed through. This workflow is divided into several steps which are described below. Here they are:

  • Request for a custom quote

    You send me a custom quote request with your project details and all the necessary information (this list is not exhaustive):

    - The target audience of the video;

    - The purpose of your video;

    - Your ideal delivery time;

    - A download link of your video;

    - A transcript of your video;

    - A glossary of the terms specifically used in your business;

    - A style guide you would like me to apply to your subtitles;

    - Any further information or document that I would find useful.

  • Video file reception

    I receive the video to subtitle and I watch it to have an overview of it. If the video is long, I watch at least the five or ten first minutes (this way, I get a general idea of the project). Thanks to this second step, I know if the video subtitling will be difficult and I determine if I can handle your multilingual subtitling project request. If not, I will send it to my colleagues.

  • Appointment scheduling

    I send you an e-mail to book a video call, so we talk more about your project and expectations. Thanks to this appointment, I also learn more about your business activity (for instance, the way you address your target audience). Moreover, I will use this information throughout the project. In the meantime, I’m preparing the next step: sending you your custom quote.

  • Sending the quote

    The purpose of this document is to supervise the English-French subtitling service. It includes some information such as:

    - The price with all taxes;

    - The duration of the service;

    - The number of subtitling files to produce;

    - The delivery time;

    - My Terms and Conditions (available here or by request).

    You have 48 hours to approve and sign the quote. After that, the quote is not valid anymore.

  • Subtitle spotting

    Spotting means placing the subtitles on the video sound wave in accordance with the timecodes. These subtitles will include the video dialogues.

  • First draft

    The first draft consists in several substeps:

    - Translating and adapting the dialogues (while taking the subtitling standards into account);

    - Terminological research, depending on the video topic (I write the terms and their definition on an Excel document).

    During this step and the next one, I can ask you questions per e-mail to clarify the moments of the video I don’t understand.

  • Review

    I check that the dialogues are correctly translated and adapted, and faithful to the English version. Again, if applicable, I can send you my questions per e-mail.

  • Proofreading

    By proofreading my work, I can see if the subtitles are fluid. In other words, do they naturally read when you watch them on-screen? I then put myself in the position of your target audience. I also check if the French language is correct (grammar, syntax, spelling…).

  • Editing on Antidote

    This forelast step completes the previous one. I can check if there any mistake left in case I forgot some while proofreading the subtitles.

  • Delivery

    To finish, I send you the completed subtitling file(s) per e-mail. The file(s) come with a report on my work. On your side, you receive them and you confirm that your are satisfied with the result. If there should be any changes, they would be made in a maximum of two back-and-forth per e-mail.
    Comment: I reserve the right to sign the subtitles I produced.

  • BONUS: Subtitling with embedding

    If desired, I can also embed the subtitles directly on your video. Please note that this step is additional to this English-French subtitling service. So, its price will be added to the original one.
